For a free alternative to VMWare see http://www.virtualbox.org/. It actually works pretty well. Here I am running Ubuntu Linux on a (cheap) laptop. Make sure to install the Guest Additions so you can resize the window.

IIRC, the free version of VirtualBox does not support USB devices and maybe a few other things. Otherwise, I agree that it's pretty functional.
