Reading a bit about Office 2010.
- Excel has now a 64 bit version. The hard limits on rows columns have not been changed, but with 64 bit you can populate them all. Moving to 64 bit has lots of implications w.r.t. OLE, etc. so I would not do this unless really needed. (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee691831(office.14).aspx, http://www.pcworld.com/article/197415/beware_of_office_2010s_64bit_shortcomings.html)
- Some statistical and other functions have been improved w.r.t accuracy. (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc179167.aspx). May be this solves the problem described here: http://yetanothermathprogrammingconsultant.blogspot.com/2009/05/excel-and-statistics.html.
- Solver has some improvements (including a genetic algorithm based solver) (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc179167.aspx).
- Powerpivot (http://www.powerpivot.com/)
- 64 bit version has some parallel HPC facilities (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc179167.aspx).
